Thoughts for Thursday: Wisdom Teeth

Hello again -
This week started pretty yucky, with a much needed trip to the dentist for a wisdom tooth extraction. The dentist had informed me at the last visit that, 'this was going to be a difficult extraction'... these are words you never want to hear from your dentist... or anyone else for that matter...

A picture of a flower... far nicer than anything to do with dentistry...
Anyhoo, I went into the surgery room bravely (albeit after a minor panic attack in the waiting room)... After much pushing, cracking, and general nastiness, the offending tooth was out... Now, I have to say I actually don't know the point in wisdom teeth. For me, they have only ever been the cause of pain. As a teenager, I had perfectly healthy teeth removed to make room for them and now, as an adult, it appears it was all in vain, as the wisdom teeth themselves have gone! Am I any wiser? Only to the pain of tooth extraction. Perhaps tooth pain is needed along the path of enlightenment to attain ultimate wisdom. For now, though, I look like I've been popping testosterone pills, as evidenced by my new manly jaw.
Anyways, I best get off... I'm making soup...
Take care.

  1. Oh you poor thing! It's so not fun! I had 4 teeth pulled as a teenager before I got braces, but my wisdom teeth impacted so I had to have surgery to cut them out. Yuck! So, I feel your pain. At least the worst is over now.
I believe wisdom teeth are a remnant if our caveman days where teeth wire out and dropped out. We generally don't need them anymore. I'd like to know who the silly person was who named them!

  2. oh sweet girl- I was giggling at the *extraction* quote {one I never want to hear in any shape or form either ;-) }...whilst feeling desperately sorry for you!!

I can only imagine how you felt in the waiting room- I bet you were even tempted to do a *runner* teeth suddenly feel all wrong reading this- an emotional/mental response of support I'm sure!

Hoping you are dosed up & now feeling slightly better!!

AND...I loved you last rype face post...I WANT your first aid box!!!!!

Lovely to see you here I'm wi-fi connected again!

  3. ha ha- that was *type face* !!!!

Just wanted to give you something to giggle about!! :-)

  4. Laura, I had all 4 wisdom teeth out many years ago, and looked like Richard Nixon for a week...drove me mad...could only eat soft stuff for quite a while.Hope you feel better...and as Melissa said...hope you're dosed up!! Robx

  5. Oh noooo, how ghastly. Poor you.

I had my three (not got a fourth apparently) wisdom teeth taken out under general anaesthetic about five years ago. I don't think I could have coped hearing all the goings-on.

We get two sets of teeth - the first to last about ten years and the second potentially 60 or 70 years. Hmmmm, definite design fault there me thinks.

    Keep smiling!!!

    Heather x

  6. Oh you poor thing!
plenty of lovely soup and mashed potato.
    Hope the pain soon eases.
Happy New Year to you and yours

  7. Oh Laura, you poor darling. I had to have all my 4 removed under general anaesthetic. The bruises lasted for 2 weeks! I hope you're feeling chipper again very soon. J x

  8. Just wanted to leave a comment to say hi, since this is my first time visiting your blog. Sorry about the wisdom teeth, but I guess the good news is that they won't bother you any more! Good luck with your recovery...

  9. Poor you i dread the dentist its all the horrible noises his tools make ,i hate going but have to try and be casual and blazay about it with the children x

  10. Apparently, wisdom teeth were very useful when it was quite normal to lose lots of teeth through rotting before we had such good dental hygiene. Those extra biggies at the back were a God-send, I bet...but now? I agree - what a palaver!

    Enjoy your soup!!

  14. One of the crucial factors to what people notice consciously or subconsciously is a person's smile. From the day we are born seeing our mothers and fathers smiling down at us to the first time a girl or boy flashed you a smile from across the room and you felt the butterflies of it or not...smiles have been part of our lives since the beginning and will matter for the rest of our existence. Smiles cross all boundaries, international and cross cultural and have been the starting point of many human relationships.
